How To Deal With Social Media Overwhelm

Hey... so before I go all 'This is how you deal with social media overwhelm', let me be really honest for a second... At the time of writing this, it's been a week where I've totally burnt myself out on social media. I mean, it had been coming for a few weeks but the last few days, my brain wasn’t even a fried egg, it was beyond that. That thing was burnt to a crisp, the fire alarms were going off and it was like ‘Get this girl some water...stat!’

The one thing I’ve learned over the last few years is just how easy it is to get overwhelmed by social media. I’ve been doing this for years and I still haven’t truly cracked the code.

Social media is 24/7 and it’s so easy to get caught up in the mindset of thinking we have to be too. We don’t. The reality is that it’s not healthy, it’s not productive and it certainly doesn’t generate the business results that you, as a small business owner, are looking for.

I know that if you are reading this then you can totally relate to this. It can really put you off doing the whole social media marketing thing altogether, right?

Well, even though I haven’t totally got this thing down, there are a couple of techniques I use to get myself back to a place of sanity when the overwhelm kicks in.

I'm implementing them right now for myself so I though, hey, why not share them with you too?

 

ONE: TAKE A BREAK (No cheating on this one!)

 

Take a break and step away. I don’t mean pretend to step away but sneakily be checking Facebook or Blab every couple of hours. Ah yes...busted! I mean fully get off the internet. I promise nothing bad will happen. Just stop.

 

TWO: WALK IT OUT

 

Go for a walk. Get some air in those lungs. B R E A T H E. So many of us forget to breathe and it’s a little crazy given it’s the one thing that keeps us alive. Priorities people. Listen to the silence and be fully present in that moment. It’s only then, you truly achieve step one.

 

THREE: DRINK TINKY TEA (aka. tea with the teabag left in ;))

 

Grab a cup of your favourite drink. For me, I’m all about the licorice and peppermint tea right now. Grab a notepad (Real paper and pens!) and write down the key action steps you need to make on social media. Once you’re done, go back through the list asking yourself, ‘Does this tie to my goals, objectives and overall business strategy?’

Now score out everything that doesn’t then put together another list. Yes, write it out again. It’s important. Each time you reiterate this list, you gain clarity and make micro commitments to actually fulfilling these tasks. They are no longer passing panic thoughts.

 

YOUR NEXT STEP

 

Now you can start to schedule slots in your calendar for each of these tasks. If there’s not time, focus on the most important and put those in. Don’t try to overdo your calendar. You can’t trick your schedule into making it work. The only thing that happens with that is you trick yourself and a few weeks later, you’re back to thinking ‘how did I end up here again?’

Now, I know how pathetically simple these steps are but when is the last time you actually took them? These are things we all know we should do but we don’t and then we get overwhelmed. This is your reminder. It’s all in the execution.

Social media isn’t everything. It’s just a communication channel that you are using as part of your marketing strategy.

Time IS your most valuable resource. Be smart. Be strategic. Be intentional.
