Finding your perfect job can be difficult. It no longer seems to matter if you are a graduate, if you have a vast amount of experience or if you are currently employed. It’s tough for everyone. Social media can help. More specifically, LinkedIn can help. LinkedIn is a professional social network. There is an expectation from users that people are online to do business. This can range from B2B sales to market research but it also includes recruitment.

Optimise Your Profile
Complete LinkedIn profiles show up in search ahead of those that are incomplete. This means if you want to stand a chance of being found, you need to complete your profile and optimise it for recruiters. This doesn’t mean using LinkedIn as a resume/cv holder. Add character and context in a professional way. Make it clear who you are, what you do, that you are looking for work and what time of work you are looking for. Include the keywords that they will be searching for and back up your qualities with a few solid recommendations. If you don’t have any, you can reach out to past employers or volunteer to do some work pro bono to get a few. If it’s the difference between securing your dream job and being last on that big pile of rejected applications, it’s worth it. You can even take it one step further by offering up your services for a limited time so they can see how valuable you are without the risk involved.
The only way you are going to stand out and get noticed by potential employers is to be proactive in your networking. Take the time to reach out to potential employees. Send personalised invitations that make your intentions clear and inviting. Thank new connections and spend time engaging with them to build up a relationship. Even if there isn’t an opportunity right now, there may be in the future so it’s worth continuing to build the relationship. This way you also show you genuinely care about the connection that you make. Back that up by sharing resources or other connections that may be valuable to them. Also be sure to connect on other social profiles too, this will add layers to your relationship and allow you to interact in different ways depending on platform.

It’s up to you to find them and complete an amazing application that will help you to stand out from the crowd. You find them by searching for your position in LinkedIn search and filtering down to only include jobs in the results. You will find additional filters down the left hand side of your search results.
Once you find a job that you would like to apply for, go for it. The way you stand out is though adding character and showing what solution you solve; what you bring to the table. Employers care so much more about whether you are a fit and can solve their problem rather than where you’ve been and what you’ve done. If you can, reach out and connect to the employer posting the job. The effort you put in to connecting, networking and building a relationship with them will make a huge difference. It turns an application form into a person with skills they want to share.
